After the long journey there, we recommend a 2-3 day stay on the Kunene River.

A Hidden Oasis in a Rugged Landscape

After a long journey through the stark yet stunning landscape, you’ll be rewarded with a picturesque river oasis—an unexpected burst of greenery in an otherwise arid region. Epupa Falls plunges 40 meters into the dramatic canyon of the Kunene River, creating a mesmerizing spectacle, especially after the rainy season in April and May.

Travel Tips:

Before departing from Opuwo, be sure to stock up on supplies (water, food, gas), as Epupa Falls offers excellent accommodation but lacks gas stations and shops. Note that during and just after the rainy season, the road along the Kunene River may be impassable.

Our Highlights:

  • Sunset Hike: A short 30-minute hike takes you up a hill for a panoramic view of the falls and oasis. The sunset atmosphere here is nothing short of magical. Bring along a sunset drink and your camera!
  • Visit a Himba Village: Witness the traditional culture of the semi-nomadic Himba people, who continue to live as their ancestors did. It’s best to organize this visit locally. Bring a small donation (including items in kind) and your camera.
  • Scenic Drive: Take the gravel road along the Kunene River from Epupa Falls to Ruacana. This route, renewed a few years ago, winds through beautiful hills and river landscapes and takes about 3-4 hours. However, it’s only accessible after the rainy season.
